MMO……..Michelle,Patty, Terri,Erin,Kate,Fern & AdrianaMMO had a “turkey-rrific” November! We had fun pretending to be turkeys, flapping our wings and saying “gobble, gobble.” We also pretended to be Johnny Pilgrim, hammering away to build his new home as we sang “Johnny Hammers.” For arts and crafts we picked bright colored feathers and glued them to paper plates to make turkey decorations. The “Turkey Poem” that we recited is on the back of the plate. We were also busy scrunching red, orange, yellow and brown tissue paper to make fall trees. And we sponge painted leaves to hang in the classroom. We sang about the falling leaves and their changing colors. One of the stories we enjoyed this month was, “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt,” a fun twist on “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” Another was “This is the Turkey,” which has a happy ending even though the roasted turkey ends up in the fish tank. And “Thanksgiving is for Giving” was about the many things we are thankful for. Thank you to all of our snack contributors and cutting helpers. We appreciate your generosity and time. This month we will get ready for Christimas with crafts, holiday songs and stories. One of our stories will be “The Gingerbread Man.” Our party sign-up sheets will be posted between the two rooms. We hope the Holiday Season brings much joy and happiness to all of our MMO students and families!!
5-day Transition Pre-K Mrs. Degnan, Mrs.K and Ms. Moira
Down came the ghost and up went the turkeys! Our classroom was decorated and prepared for Thanksgiving during the entire month of November.
Our crafts for the month included our large turkey in the hall that had the students decorate with beautiful feathers. The class also made Indian corn, painted leaves to make special turkey feathers. The boys and girls learned about cornucopia and how it was used at the special feast between the Indians and the Pilgrims. The class was fascinated to learn how the Indians made such bright paint colors from things in nature.
We made Indian vests and made them to look like real leather. The class made cranberry relish on Science Day. They learned about the bitter cranberry taste in raw form and how sugar used in the recipe helps to sweeten that bitterness!
The class was interested in how the Indians used symbols for their written words. Pictograph and petroglyph was introduced to them to explain how the symbols were drawn or carved on sides of rock. They drew their favorite symbol and also made ‘sand’ art with herbs on sandpaper. The pictures were Messengers for the Corn and Messenger of the Gods. They loved using herbs to help design their special Indian picture!
We enjoyed our Thanksgiving Feast over a nice bowl of ‘Friendship Soup’. All the children enjoyed contributing to this special meal. This was the lesson of Thanksgiving; to bring together all the wonderful talents and share them with each other in our class!!!The boys and girls enjoyed playing a few Native American games along with ‘hide the turkey’ and ‘pass the feather’.
The class continues to work on letter and number recognition. They are all making terrific progress. This class loves to learn!
Thank you for all the contributions that many of the parents have donated to our class for these wonderful fall festivities.
We are now gearing up for 2012 events…Zipper Day, conferences, word wall words and S-N-O-W!
Reminder: I will be e-mailing everyone in the event of a snow day, or listen for closing of # 455 (Haverford School District) on the tv and radio.
We wish all our families a wonderful and blessed Christmas. We look forward to a very happy new year with your child!
4 Day Pre-K . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jeanne Riehs and Mary Jo Stolz We began the month of November by painting individual cornucopias. Then we filled the Horn of Plenty with a variety of cut out fruits and vegetables. In addition we created a large brown turkey together and then individually decorated it with colorful tissue feathers. We made coffee filter turkeys by squeezing food coloring on to the dampened filters. What beautiful colors we made, and everyone was different! We also created our own Thanksgiving placemats which Mrs. Riehs had laminated. In addition, we made a turkey card and put together a special thankfulness bag for our parents. We learned about the First Thanksgiving and how the Indians and Pilgrims worked together. We made paper Indian teepees and painted canoes to (pretend) float in an Indian Village Scene. We also got to play in a real Indian teepee. For our Thanksgiving Feast we all wore Indian necklaces. The girls wore Pilgrim hats and the boys wore Indian head pieces. When we sat down to eat, we shared chicken noodle soup made by Lauren’s Mom, saltine crackers, and a Cornucopia snack made from bugles, vanilla icing, and Trix cereal. We had pumpkin pie and Oreo cookies for desert, YUM !. We also played a Thanksgiving Lotto game with riddles. What fun ! We ended our feast by having Mrs. Degan’s class of Indians visit us. We sang an Indian song and recited a Pilgrim poem for them. Then we taught them how to dance the ” Turkey Wobble” and say the following in sign language: you, me all friends, thank you and bless you! A big THANK YOU to Jenna’s Mom and Sean O’Connor’s Mom who joined Mrs. Riehs and Mrs. Stolz as Pilgrims to cook and serve our feast, and to all who sent in our special foods. Also, a special thanks to Mary Kate’s Mom who sent in thanksgiving favors for everyone! We met the letters G, H, and I during November. For “G” week we read about giraffes. “H” week we learned about Hippos and talked about happiness. During “ I ” week we learned all about Indians, and did crayon rubbings of our initials. As usual we had some great show & tells this month. Our favorites were: Connor’s whistle from Argentina, Brendan M’s music stick, and Annie’s light sprights. Happy 5th birthday to Sean Kessler, Annie and Mary Kate We hope that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Remember, CHRISTMAS is just around the corner. The children have already started practicing for their show. Thank you to all who helped with the cuttings this month!
3 day pre k……………..Dawn Rocce & Gina Hatton
November has come and gone already! I can’t believe how quickly this year is going! We are having a wonderful time in class each and every day! This month, we have been working on the Letters H, I and J. Everyone is doing a terrific job with the Letter Box each week! Have you seen our board with all of the words that we know for each letter? I told the children that I need a larger board because they are all doing so well with their words and sounds! Please keep encouraging your child to bring in items for the Letter Box! It’s a great way to practice their sounds and increase their communication skills in the classroom. We have been quite busy doing crafts for the Fall and Thanksgiving! We made owls out of torn brown paper and fingerprint stalks of corn. We painted our hands, each finger a different color, to make beautiful handprint turkeys for our families. The class also made special Thanksgiving headbands. Our Thanksgiving Feast was delicious! We all worked together to make turkey sandwiches and pumpkin bread! We then all sat down together at our beautiful decorated tables to enjoy our sandwiches, bread, corn muffins and apple juice. Thanks to all who helped contribute to our feast! When we brought our own leaves to class, we had a terrific time comparing them during Circle Time. Some were large, some were small. Some were brown, some were red or yellow or green! It was a lot of fun! What a nice morning it was when a real Police Officer came to school to teach us a little about his job and how he is there to help us all! We were even allowed to sit in his police car and make the sirens go off! We also had special surprises this month with our Mystery Readers visiting our class to read at story time. Thanks to Maddy’s mom and Shawn’s sister for reading to us! This is truly a special treat for the children! Thanks again to all who help with the cuttings at home! Please begin to work with your children on putting on their jackets and zippering their coats!
3 Day Pre-K Donna Tustin and Kate Gross November was a very busy month in Pre-K. We learned about the letters Hh, Ii and Jj , as well working on the numbers 1 through 5. We also talked about shapes and opposites. And the children are having fun with their Show and Tell items. They have many interesting things to share with everyone. We had a visit from a Police Officer and even got to get into a police car! And, of course, we learned about the Indians, Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving Day. Our Thanksgiving Day feast was just delicious!! We had turkey shaped turkey sandwiches, cranberry sauce that we made ourselves, grapes, celery stuffed with cream cheese, pumpkin pie and cookies. It was a feast fit for Pilgrims, Indians and everyone in our pre-k family! We hope that your Thanksgiving Day feast was as good as ours! After eating, we had fun playing games and doing our Indian poems and songs while beating on our Tom-Toms. We all took turns saying what we are thankful for – mine was having an awesome group of children in our class. We hope you enjoyed all of the fall surprises the children made for you. They worked very hard on the cranberry sauce and Turkey centerpieces, to name a few. The children also made beautiful Dream Catchers. It was a great Thanksgiving celebration for all of us! We hope that everyone will soon be in our two “Clubs” – The Zipper Club and the Name Club. Please continue to practice at home. We’re looking forward to a fun-filled December! Our continued thanks to everyone for all that you do! We’re looking forward to a fun-filled December. Happy Birthday to Bree and Cecelia! Kindergarten Enrichment ………….Mrs. Riehs
We review our letter sounds each day. This month we practiced the consonant letters d, f, g, and h. We continue to listen to a song for each letter. These songs help us learn more words that begin with each letter sound. We also continue to review our recognition of the color and number words. On our USA map we moved west from Pennsylvania and covered the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. We also located the five Great Lakes and colored them in blue. For Math, we are continuing to formulate our numbers correctly from 0 to 15, and we are working on simple addition facts. We put together a “Turkey Wheel” to practice our facts. All you have to do is flip the turkey’s wing to check your answer. We also have been working on number patterns. In preparation for Thanksgiving we read a Rebus story of the First Thanksgiving, made a booklet entitled, “We Give Thanks” and practiced some Indian writing symbols. We also created and played an Indian stick game. We used craft sticks for this. We had our own feast in a special way. There were five different snacks in bowls: pretzels, bugles, teddy grahams, mini Oreos and Trix cereal. Each person rolled a die in front of each snack and took from the bowl the number that was rolled on the die. Mrs. Riehs was nice, if we rolled a one we got another turn. For seconds we could roll the die to choose our favorite snack of the five.Parents, please note that the last day for Kindergarten Enrichment before the Christmas Holidays is Thursday, December 15.
2 day Nursery and Friday……..Mrs. B and Miss Moira November was an exciting month! This month we learned all about Native American Indians and Thanksgiving! We learned how Native American Indians lived in communities. How they worked and supported each other. Just like we do in our classroom! All the children did a great job lacing canoes for their Indian boy and Indian girl. The children have been working hard on their tracing and pencil skills to be able to write our names. We traced Teepee’s to make an Indian village. It looked great displayed on our mural that the Friday class painted. We made Indian corn to represent how the Indians taught the pilgrims how to grow corn to feed their families. Later we made Indian Head dresses and used patterns to decorate them. We also made Indian necklaces from noodles we colored with food coloring. Then we learned how the first Thanksgiving was celebrated. Thank you for contributing to our own Thanksgiving feast. We had a great meal! It was delicious! We made our own Turkeys by dotting coffee filters. I hope everyone got the chance to see them in the hallway. The children had fun making them and telling us what their turkeys like to eat! We reviewed 1-5 by putting feathers on a turkey, made 5 little turkeys to go with our funny poem “Five Fat Turkeys”, and made patterns with apples, corn, and pumpkins! We reviewed over, under, beside, and on top of in a turkey book we made. and we learned how to set a table and make a Thanksgiving dinner using our scissor skills. Our Friday class painted our Indian village mural, We continue to review our tracing skills, numbers, and tracing. We made hungry turkeys and gave out a recipe for everyone’s Turkey left over to go with our pumpkin pie we made that smelled just like the real thing!Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving gift we made for you!! And the Thanksgiving Hand print turkey card! The children loved squeezing the glue and mixing the beans to make the festive candle holder. And thank you to all the families that brought in the fruit cups so we could make the project! I gratefully appreciated it! Happy November Birthday’s go out to Talia and Sammy!
3 day Nursery………..Miss Val and Miss Linda Fall was fun…we enjoyed watching the leaves change into their beautiful colors! We started off this month with the letters E and F and numbers 4 and 5. Practicing our writing skills is so much fun. We celebrated Thanksgiving by making “Friendship Muffins” to share with the Pilgrims and Indians in our class. We dressed in headresses with feathers and wore beads with our Indian vests. The Pilgrims were a sight with their staunchly white hats. We loved painting our “No Turkey’s Here” and our A-MAIZE-ing corn! We also started practicing for our Christmas show. It’s not even Thanksgiving Day and we already know all of our songs! Look out Radio City…here we come!
