5-day Pre-K Mrs. Degnan, Mrs. K and Ms. Moira
Welcome back to school in 2012! Everyone in our class looks so much older (except for the teachers of course!)
Our class made confetti and blew horns as we counted backwards to celebrate the new year. The students had fun tossing confetti all over the playground in celebration.
We shared one of our favorite Christmas gifts for show ‘n tell day. We saw lots of American Girl Dolls and electronic games!
For letter ‘Mm’ week we were busy counting and graphing our M&M candy and also making muffins. We then enjoyed eating our muffins along with a real mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows!
Our class celebrated Martin Luther King with a friendship linked paper chain and a song about Acts of Kindness. We all discussed what we would do to show our kindness on our day off from school.
We made little snow creatures of our own out of playdough. Since we can’t have the ‘real thing’ this year it was fun pretending it was real snow. Thanks to Mrs. Bello for making our special snow play dough!
For our science project we learned how frost is produced on our windows and on our cars. It was a fun project.
The class did a great job on speech bubble writing. They picked a picture of a person out of a magazine and used their ‘imagination’ to come up with what they might be saying or thinking. Then they wrote that thought in a bubble above the picture.
The class also continued with their imagination to write a story with each child contributing one sentence to build quite a story! We displayed our wonderful written works in the hall way.
Zipper Day is a huge competition for our class. The students were very well prepared for our special awards of zipper achievement!
We have begun our sight words and are progressing very quickly. The class is very good at finding our words in the books we read and books they read to themselves. It is fun for them when they achieve this success.
Our number recognition is also growing. This class is very good at math and they enjoy learning all about the use of numbers. We even measured our classroom with Lego blocks! It took over 200 large Lego blocks to go around the 4 walls of our class room!
We will continue with Star Student until the middle of February and then switch over to Special Student Fridays for the remaining months of the school year.
The class will be practicing phone numbers and addresses to prepare for conferences with the parents. We are very prepared to show our parents how much we learned this year and how excited we are to be going to kindergarten.
3 day pre k …..Mrs. Rocce & Mrs. Hatton
Happy New Year! Our class rang in 2012 as we began the new year with lots of laughs and stories about our holidays! We talked about that a New Year’s Resolution meant and then we each chose one thing that we would like to do better this year and made them into pictures for all to see. They are hanging proudly in our hallway!
This month we learned all about the letters M, N, O and P! We made mittens and talked about how some things come in pairs. The Letter Box continues to fill up each day with items and we all love “clapping out” the Word of the Week during Circle Time. This helps us in remembering some of the site words to get us ready for Kindergarten!
In honor of the Letter P, we had Pajama Day! We wore our pajamas to school and enjoyed snacks that began with the Letter P! We also painted with potatoes!
We have been talking a lot about the winter season and the weather that it brings! Check out our display of snowmen! Beautiful glitter snowflakes are hanging down from our ceiling! We are looking forward to our next BIG snowfall!
This month one of our themes was “Children Around the World”. We chose to take a closer look at Italy! We found it on our globe and talked about how it looked just like a boot! We also voted that the best way to travel to Italy would be by airplane! Part of our discussion was all about the delicious food they have there! We headed to the kitchen to make our own individual pizza’s! We got a little messy, but the end result was well worth it! They were delicious! We learned that the colors in pizza – red sauce, white cheese and green oregano – were the same colors in the Italian flag! Look for our Michelangelo masterpieces hanging in the hallway! Each child created a special painting UPSIDEDOWN! It was so much fun!
We have been working hard this month on assessments to get ready for the Parent/Teacher conferences. Reminders will go out with your assigned time on Feb. 23rd.
Thanks to our January Mystery Readers – Alexis‘s grandmom, Bianca’s mom and Avery‘s mom AND dad! We always enjoy special visitors in class!
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Erin, Bianca and Fred!
Keep working on those zippers and writing names!
MMO….Michelle, Terri, Erin , Patty, Kate, Adrianna, & Fern
January was a fun month for MMO. We welcomed in the New Year by decorating party hats with dot markers and counting down from “10″ to “1″ then shouting “Happy New Year!”
Some other fun things we did involved mittens and penguins. We stamped one pair of mittens with snowflakes and gave them a fluffy cuff and we glued shapes onto a second pair.. At circle time we talked about a pair meaning two and discussed that we have a pair of hands, eyes, etc. We sang songs about mittens keeping our hands warm and dry and played a mitten color matching game. We enjoyed listening to the stories of “The Three Little Kittens” by Paul Galdone and “The Mitten,” by Jan Brett. For our penguin theme we read “Five Little Penguns,” waddled as we sang “I’m a Little Penguin” and made puppets by glueing ovals, triangles and circles together. The words to our penguin songs are attached to the back of our puppets.
We have also been taking turns saying our first and last names, reciting the alphabet and counting from 1 to 20. The children follow the sparkle star as I use it to point to each letter and number.
This month we will decorate hearts, learn a Valentine poem, and take turns telling the group who we love as we pass the “Love” heart around. We will celebrate with Valentine’s Day parties. The sign-up sheets will be posted between the two classrooms.
Thank you for so generously sending in snacks and supplies and for cutting out projects! We will not be needing water this month, as we have plenty! Your contributions and support are greatly appreciated!!
Kindergarten Enrichment.. . . . . . . . . .Mrs. Riehs
As our new year continues we review our letter sounds frequently and often play a memory game with familiar sight words.
We’ve begun to explore the globe and have learned about the four directions on a compass. We can identify the country N of the USA, Canada, and, the country S of the USA, Mexico.
On our USA map we’ve continued to cover all of the Northern states (Minnesota, No and So Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington) to reach the Pacific Ocean. Just ask us where potatoes come from.
Delving into our “Winter Wonderland” theme we’ve completed a snowman sequence picture, and a bear’s winter sleep sequence. We created a mitten match game with five pairs of mittens each, and painted an original snow scene. Our pictures were all different even though they all had to contain three things: a tree, a house, and a snowman.
We covered the letters M, N, P, and Q this month. The song we liked best was for the letter “N”. It was called; Nine Nieces and Nephews.
With the new year we began a Math workbook, perfecting the numbers 11to 14. We are also working on double number additions.
In the kitchen we made English muffin pizzas and ate them with a chip, YUM !mg
4 day Pre-K Class . . . . . . . Jeanne Riehs and Mary Jo Stolz
We began the New Year 2012 by cutting circles and making snowmen. We added a hat and colorful scarves to brighten their faces. Continuing with our Winter theme, we painted matching mittens. We leaped right into our travel unit by examining a globe. Every time we looked at the world we spotted the USA first.
First we traveled east to the triangular country of India. We examined the mountains and the plains, and talked about the monsoons that bring so much rain to the area. We also saw many pictures of the national bird of India, the peacock, a model of which we made out of a paper plate.
From India we traveled west to the boot-shaped country of Italy. We learned to recognize the green, white and red flag of this country. We learned about a most unusual tower that leans in the city of Pisa. We saw pictures of the Italian city of Venice where people travel from place to place in small boats because there are no roads just waterways. We also sorted five kinds of pasta, and ate pizza. Arrivederci!
Finally, we traveled southeast (down under) from Italy to the country of Australia. We learned to recognize the red, white and blue flag of Australia, and made a booklet which showed all the unusual animals that live there. The kangaroo and the koala were our favorites. G’DAY !
We had some great show & tells this month to start the New Year. To name a few, there were Mary Kate’s pogo stick, Charlotte’s digadoo instrument, CJ’s talking parrot, and Jenna’s hello Kitty slippers. Our favorite was Annie’s uncle, Officer Bennett!
This month, we met the letters M, N, O, and P. For “M” week we painted the famous Mona Lisa. For “N” week, we practiced printing our NAMES. During “O” week we made odd ostriches out of ovals. “P” week was our time to make potato prints and play with our puppet theater. A big thank you to the Moms who helped with the cuttings this month.
Bundle up! It’s Winter and it’s COLD outside!!!
2 day Nursery and Friday ..Mrs.B & Miss Moira
January has been cold, but we haven’t seen much snow. So we made our own winter wonderland in our hallway! We started this month practicing our scissors skills making our own unique snowflake. No two snowflakes are alike, just like us!! We used our fine motor and made beaded snowflakes falling down from our ceiling! We read the story “Snowmen at night” and made our own snowmen using glue and shaving cream! Then we wondered what our snowman would do at night! We made our own snowman with painted boxes. Thanks to the Friday class that paint the boxes! We discussed how to build a snowman and the difference between Large, medium, and small. We all decided to call him Frosty. I told them the story of “Snow Dude”. The book is about a snowman that children made and made a wish for it to come alive. It ran all over town and along the way he caused a lot of mischief. The children were surprised when they came into the classroom and found snow and our own snowman in our classroom!!! He left such a mess!!! Then Mrs. B found a note from Frosty that said he was very proud of our class for being such great friends!!! He even left us lollypops!! We also have been having a great time throwing pretend snowballs at each other inside our classroom! And making special snowball soap! To help us learn to properly wash our hands.
We learned the letters M, N,O and P this month. We made Many Mini Marshmallows in a Mug for the letter M, painted Mittens with large Marshmallows and we played Mitten Bingo to help review our numbers. For the Letter N we used our scissor skills and cut Newspaper and glued it to the letter N. We glued Cheerios to the letter O and learned about Opposites. Our Friday class laced skates, painted with Ice, and made Muffins for the letter M, For the letter P we made pretend Pizza’s with Peppers and Pepperoni. Then we made real Pizza! It was delicious!!
We took a trip to the Polar Regions and learned all about Penguins!! We learned the Emperor Penguin grows to be 3 ft. tall and weights about 100 lbs. So we measured different things in the classroom including children to see how tall an Emperor Penguin really is!! The children were surprise to hear that the Dad penguin stays and takes care of the egg and hatches the egg while the mommy penguin goes off to eat as much food so when she comes back she can take over and feed the baby penguin (This lead to some great discussions during circle time.)
“Namaste!” We took a trip to India where our Bengal Tiger came from! Besides learning about India’s map and flag we learned that the Tiger is the national animal of India! Tigers are admired for his strength and grace. The Peacock, which is the national bird, symbolizes grace, pride and beauty and are often used in mythology. We made a Lotus flower which is the national flower. It symbolizes purity of the heart and mind. We also made Mehndi Hand decorations by dipping yarn in glue and twirling it around to make a design. We learned about Rangoli Designs which is a traditional form of artwork in India using geometric designs. It was a great way to review some of our shapes. And finally we loved eating the national fruit, Mango’s!
We will be having conferences on March 28 and March 29th. I’ll be sending out more information as we get closer to the date.
Next Month our theme will be Love and Friendship! Happy Birthday to Molly and Anna T!!
3 Day Pre-K Mrs. Tustin and Mrs. Gross
We wish you a happy, healthy 2012! January was definitely a busy, but fun month in our class. We learned all about the letters M, N, O, and P. We had “Christmas Show-n-Tell” and everyone brought in their favorite gift. It was great seeing and hearing about all of the
special presents the children received. We rang in the New Year by
putting our New Year’s Resolutions out in the hallway. We started out the month by talking about winter, snow and cold weather animals. We made Matching Mittens to hang by our window and put adorable penguins in the hallway. We started a few new activities in our room – journals and writing our last names. We learned a lot about the country of Mexico. It was fun making piñatas by painting on white bags with popsicle paints and filling them with lots of treats. We also enjoyed making and playing maracas, and learning about the people of Mexico and their culture. We talked about the colorful clothing, tall hats, musical instruments, language and food. We learned the song “Uno, Dos, Tres Amigos” and danced “The Mexican Hat Dance!” We also had a great Fiesta, with yummy cinnamon crisps that we made ourselves. Thanks to everyone who send in food and interesting items from Mexico! And there was P week – one of our favorite weeks of the year. The highlight of P week was Pajama Day. It was so cozy to wear our pajamas to school for our delicious Pancake breakfast – mmm, mmm, those pancakes were good! There’s nothing like pancakes with melty, gooey chocolate chips in them. Scrumptious to eat!!! What a fun morning! We now look forward
to February and Groundhogs Day, Valentines Day and Presidents Day. Thanks to everyone who sent in treats for our piñatas and for our
Fiesta! Happy 5th Birthday to Amelia and Alex! And welcome to our new friend – Sophia.
3 day Nursery Class……….Miss Val & Miss Linda
We’re working on letters J, K ,Land numbers 6,7,and 8. We made ice skates, matching mittens, and drew our faces on paper dishes to make us look like Eskimos. We loved reading about “The Three Little Kittens”, so we made matching paper mittens. We are practicing our cutting skills each day. We are becoming “Snipping Champs”
We are beginning to fill our fancy folders with all our hard work. We will show it to you on Conference Day
