October 2011 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
On September 13, the children in the Nursery School attended their first assembly! We gathered outside  together to  celebrate the USA. We all carried  American Flags.  The 3 day 3 year old class carried paper torches and wore paper crowns just like the Statue of Liberty. Once in our places, Mrs. Riehs led us in prayer. We then found our hearts, placed one hand over them and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. altogether. When we finished we  sang “God Bless America”. At the end of our ceremony, we gave a cheer for our country. While we waved our flags frantically we chanted ” Hip Hip Hooray…..for the USA” . We began the 2011-2012 school year with great patriotism!
Wednesday’s Lunch Bunch for Children’s Hospital collected $155.00 .
Thank you for your participation.
MMO is warming up to the routine of the program . They are making great strides with their small steps. The teachers gain the children’s trust with their patience, understanding and care.
Thank you for the paper products and thank you for being so careful in choosing snacks for the class.
Arrival and dismissal.- Thank you so much for leaving the  parking spots in front of the church for the moms with babies. We can keep the parking lot traffic flowing if we get IN and OUT of the building quickly.  Even though we stagger arrival and dismissal times,WE NEED YOUR PARKING SPOT!
BEWARE ….the beautiful tree in front of the church just beckons to be climbed. STAY OUT OF THE TREE…….DYLAN BROKE HIS ARM IN IT.

We got off to a great start!  It was nice to finally see all of your smiling faces! All of the children are adjusting very well.  We are learning our routine, new songs, and making friends!   We are so proud of them!!  They are doing a great job!
On our first getting acquainted day, we heard the story of the Rainbow Fish.  We decorated our own fish and shared our glittery scales with everyone to help us learn to be good friends!
For our first week of school we reviewed the Circle shape by making our own version of the artist’s Kadinsky’s “Circle Painting” by making a circle collage!  They look beautiful hanging in our hallways!!  Thank you for bring in pictures of your child to add to our Art work.  We discussed what the shape of a circle is and the children had great answers!  I hope you all got the chance to read our answers in the hallway! And for the color Yellow we made Yellow sunshine!  We practiced our scissor skills by cutting up the yellow pages and turning them into a nice piece of art work.
We learned the letter “A” and the color Red!  We made our own apples with red paint and glitter to make them shine!  For a nice science lesson we made apple sauce.  The children loved cutting up the pieces of apple and eating some too!  The apple sauce was delicious!, Learned a new poems “Way up High in the Apple tree” and “Five little Apples hanging in a Tree”.  For Math we are reviewing numbers 1-5 by making a apple counting book.  We had fun measuring ourselves by counting “How many Apples am I”.  We tasted yellow, green, and red apples and made a chart to see which apple everyone liked best.  there was a tie in the M-W class and the Green apple won in the T-TH class!  We also listened to the story of the “Magic Star in the Apple” story.
For the letter “B” we brought in our own Teddy Bears and had a Teddy Bear Picnic!  We made our own teddy bear by gluing on Buttons and Bows, worked on patterns by using chocolate and vanilla teddy graham crackers and stickers!, we went on our own bear hunt, and gave our teddy bears a ride on a parachute!  Then we learned a song about our teddy bear’s body parts!  We read the book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see” then we asked what could our bears see!  Great ideas from the children!!  We learned the color Blue by making Blue Bubble prints and blew bubbles at recess!  And made a “Band aide Book” which I hope you all enjoyed reading!
Our Friday class made a beautiful Hand print flag to show our patriotism and learned the Pledge of Allegiance.  We reviewed our colors and circle shape by making a “I spy a circle shape” book which they could read themselves!  We counted seeds inside a apple and reviewed what “Whole” and “Half” means using an apple.  For the letter B we painted with baseballs and glued buttons on a B.
Our favorite activities are playing at the play dough table, recess, and playing a game of “Mousy, Mousy” and “Five Little Apples” Don’t forget to check your children’s back packs!  And check out our hallway of art and in the classroom!

MMO…Miss Michele, Miss Adriana, Miss Fern, Miss Patty, Miss Erin, Miss Terri and Miss Kate
Welcome MMO families!  Our first 2 weeks went very well.  The children were engaged in various activites around the room.  They were cooking in the kitchen center, playing with dolls, pushing trains around the train table, building block towers, putting together puzzles, flipping through books, and coloring apples, school buses and teddy bears.  During circle time we sang “Way Up High in the Apple Tree” and “The Wheels on the Bus”.  We also learned “TheTeddy Bear Poem”.
The children are doing a wonderful job following the classroom routine.  They know that when the lights blink and they hear the “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” song it is clean-up time.  They have also learned to open their napkins into a big square for snack and to throw away their cup and napkin when they are done.
On the first day of school everyone should have filled out the pick-up and photo release forms, checked their email address and taken home the policies and procedures information.  If you missed something or have any questions please let us know.
This month we look forward to celebrating Halloween with crafts, stories and parties.  There will be a party each day from Tuesday the 25th to Monday the 31st so that everyone has a chance to celebrate.  Sign-up sheets will be posted on the wall between the 2 MMO rooms.  The children will not participate in the school parade.  Wearing costumes for the parties is optional.
If anyone would like to help with cutting out projects please sign-up on the sheet posted above the hooks in Room B.
Thank you for sending in suppies.  And especially, thank you for sharing your beautiful children with us.  We look forward to a wonderful school year!!
September 2011                 Mrs. Degnan, Mrs.K and Ms. Moira
Welcome to 5-day Transition Pre-K!  What an exciting year ahead for us.  We began our month getting to know our classmates.  We introduced ourselves to each other and picked a new friend to recite a poem with.  The class liked this way of meeting a new friend!
Beach week was fun for the class.  The students told about their vacations and what shore points they visited, or mountain resorts!  They painted fancy fish and described what they might see under water.  The class read about many special types of fish and picked the puffer fish as a the class favorite!  The boys and girls painted shells and played a bean bag toss onto a star fish!
Apple week was all about the different types of apples that we see in the fall season.  We heard about Johnny Appleseed and how kind he was.  The class planted seeds and pretended to be Johnny Appleseed planting more apple trees.  The class voted on which type of apple tasted the best.  Red apples are always the most popular kind.  We also made art work to put in our hallway.  The highlight was baking with apples!  Everyone loves baking and eating!
Bears were everywhere as we learned about the letter Bb!  The class shared stories about their own favorite bear and how much they love them.  We measured the teddy bears to see who had the biggest bear, a medium size bear and the smallest bear. We ate our snack for a teddy bear picnic.  The class also made butter for b week and sampled it on crackers.  It taste so good when you make it yourself!
The students are very excited about participating in bringing in words that begin with the letter of the week.  The dictionary game is fun for the children to play also.  The love guessing the words to the definitions.  We will be doing this every Thursday.
Star Student also has begun.  This is so important to each child to experience their ‘special week’.  Please feel free to be as creative as you want with the Friday Special Snack and the stories you write about your child.
Thank you to Patrick’s mom for making all the wonderful September playdough.  The class loves playing with the playdough on Fridays.
All your paper product contributions and donations are appreciated. Thank you so much.
Our class will continue practicing upper and lower case letters.  They are now trying to print their names starting with the capital followed by lower case letters.  We are also reviewing numbers 1-10.  Alot of the class can already count much higher!
The transition to a full day has been very smooth and the class has adjusted well.  We are looking forward to the cooler weather and the leaves changing color.
3 day pre k …Mrs. Tustin & Mrs. Gross
What a great class we have!  We’ve had so much fun learning and playing that September went by in the blink of an eye.  We enjoyed learning about each other through our “All About Me” bags.  For “Aa” week, we painted with apples, made apple necklaces and heard a story about a little boy trying to find a red house with no windows or doors, and a star in the middle – you guessed it – an apple.  We hope you enjoyed the delicious smelling “apple pies” we made with real cinnamon.  We learned that most people in our class enjoy Red Delicious apples, while only a few truly like Yellow Delicious and Green Granny Smith apples.
“Bb” week brought the beach to our classroom.  We made a sandy beach in a bag with beautifully colored shells and we compared different types of shells and even heard the ocean in one of them. We read the story about a Rainbow Fish who shared his shiny scales with his friends and then made our own Rainbow Fish, as well as Jellyfish and “Paper plate” fish.  Don’t forget to take a peek into our room and see the ocean full of fish that is hanging on the wall!  We talked about all of the different types of balls the children brought into the room.  We made our own paper beach balls. Bb week sure was a lot of fun!
With “Cc” week came yummy looking (and tasting – which we did after counting the pieces) candy corn and a crazy circle caterpillar.  We also had Teddy Bear Day, which was a ton of fun with everyone bringing his or her favorite fuzzy friend to school for the day.  We welcomed Autumn by making a colorful falling leaves scene and learning some really fun fall poems and songs.
September was definitely a great month!
Thanks to all of the parents for sending in supplies and for volunteering your help.
Happy 5th Birthday to Evan and Luke!
Kindergarten  Enrichment ………..  Mrs. Riehs
We are off to a great start in Kindergarten Enrichment.  Each day we begin by practicing our letter sounds. We have completed a letter paper for the vowel letters A, E and I.  Each week we hear a new song about the letter of the week. The songs are catchy and teach us more words beginning with that letter. Our favorite song this month was “Everybody loves “E.”
We have been working on reviewing the recognition of all of the capital letters of the alphabet and their corresponding lower case letters. We are also working on the correct way to make all the numbers from 1 to 10. Our number poems are helping us with this.
On Thursday, we are doing a map study of the USA. We began by coloring in Pennsylvania, the state where we live, and Florida, the state we like to visit because of Disney World.  We also found and colored New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
We talked about Johnny Appleseed, made a little rhyming book about apples, and also made apple print patterns with real apples.
We will continue to read or listen to a story each day, checking for comprehension by asking questions. Have a happy Autumn Season!
3 day Pre k ………..Mrs. Rocce & Mrs. Hatton
I can’t believe that October is here! We’ve been having a great time in class! Thanks for a great start to a new school year!
We have been working hard on practicing writing our first names! The children are doing a terrific job! Please continue to practice this skill at home.
In September, we learned all about the Letters A, B and C. For the Letter A, we painted using apples. We found out that by cutting an apple in half – it makes a star pattern! We found out that red apples are the most popular in our class! Yummy! We got started on our “All About Me Bags” too. We will continue to work on sharing them with the class in the coming days! For the Letter B, we glued buttons on the Letter B and painted with B‘s that were the color blue. Our class ended the week with Ball Day! The children brought in a variety of balls to share with the class. We compared them during Circle Time. Which one was largest, smallest, in the middle, softest, ect.? For the Letter C, we all made our own piece of a Crazy Caterpillar. Look for it in the classroom! We then pasted cotton balls on paper to form the Letter C!
Teddy Bear Day was a huge hit! Everyone had their own unique bear to share in class. They sat with us in circle and helped us with the calendar, weather and even the Letter Box!
4 Day Pre-K Class                     Jeanne Riehs and Mary Jo Stolz
After getting acquainted with our new friends and our big beautiful classroom, we talked about “Summertime” and the beach.  We examined seashells and heard the roar of the ocean in one.  We sat in a little beach chair, played catch with a beach ball, and put our hands in the sand. We completed a crayon rubbing of a beach scene, and also sponge-painted a school of fish for the back bulletin board.
For “A” week we made appleman prints with real apples and created paper apple necklaces. We also read a story about Johnny Appleseed, and learned an Apple Tree rhyme and song.  For our science lesson we compared the size, seeds and color of apples and examined the “star” you see in the center of the apple if you cut it a special way.  We also compared the apple seeds with cantaloupe, watermelon and a big peach seed.
For “B” week we made finger-print balloons which became name cards, and we learned a song about all the things our BODY can do. We decorated a paper Teddy, made a large sign that read We Love Teddy Bears and put together a Bear story booklet that we could read. We also had fun on “ball day” when we learned that not all balls can bounce.  What a beautiful and busy “B” week we had !
We celebrated Teddy Bear Day this month when everyone’s favorite Teddy Bear came to school.  The Teddies were big and small.  Many of them were brown, tan, or white in color, but we did have some more colorful ones. We laughed a lot when we bounced our Teddies to music on the big parachute. Although our Teddy Bears were different in size and color, they were all alike in one way.  They were all Huggable. On this day we also retold the “Three Little Bears” story with special sequence pictures, and did a large Teddy Bear floor puzzle.  What fun we had!
Happy 5th Birthday to: Charlotte and Connor.  GO PHILLIES !
We started off this years nursery class with a barrell of fun!  The letter “A” brought us lots of apples.  Yellow, red, and green apples were all around us.  Our class voted on and graphed our favorite color apple; red and green were the favorites!  We compared our apples (shapes and sizes) then cut our apples in half.  Inside we found a surprise… it was a star!   With our cut apples we made apple prints.  Along with exploring apples we worked on our pencil grip, tracing lines, and the number one.  ”B” week was a blast!  Honey Bee visited us at circle.  We sang “Bee” songs then made blue B’s with booboos and covered them up with band-aids.  Bring your bear to school was also special.  Our bears joined us with daily activites and then we paraded with them around our school.  We are learning the classroom routine and everyone is adjusting so nicely.  We know our friends’ names and most importantly how to share with one another.  All the children are happy and excited about each activity.  Thanks for all the supplies and snacks! Keep a lookout for “Chimpy Banana” (class pet) sign-up sheet in October!
